Newsletter - Term 1, Week 6 2025
Principal's Update
Welcome back to the 2025 school year and a particularly warm welcome to our year 7 students and families and those who have enrolled in our school this year in the other year levels.
We have experienced a very positive start to the year, with staff and students focussed on creating the expectations and routines where students learn and thrive.
Our theme for the year continues to be building a strong community, where all students experience our school motto Success for All. This means we notice and celebrate every young person for who they are. Our commitment is for all students to:
- Develop purpose, belonging, and wellbeing,
- Become thriving learners,
- Transition to a fulfilling future.
Our school values of Respect, Equality, Pride, Integrity, and Resilience remain the foundation for everything we do.
Unfortunately, our school was once again the target of biased and unfair media reporting at the start of the year. The incident was expertly handled by our staff and the wellbeing of all students involved was always our first priority. Incidents, such as this, are in the absolute minority. In fact, our students (your children) achieve amazing things all the time. Our community need to hear these stories, because this is the true story about what is happening in this school every day of the week.
So, we are working closely with the Media Team from the Department of Education to collect, curate and publish a series of good news stories which we will share with our community via our various media platforms (website, Facebook page, newsletter, etc). This is a positive step and a way our community can take back control of the narrative portrayed beyond the school gates.
Sarah West is heading up the school team working on this project, and Darren Walker, Governing Council Chairperson, is also excited to hear from families about the successes your child(ren) have experienced at this school. Sarah and Darren can be contacted via email if you have a good news story which needs to be shared.

Keep an eye on our media platforms over the coming weeks/months as these stories are shared and published.
Fast Food and Energy Drinks
During a recent quadrangle assembly, I spoke with our students about not bringing fast food and energy drinks into the school grounds. Whilst I have my own concerns about young people overindulging in these unhealthy foods and drinks, I acknowledge it is not my place to tell them what they can or cannot consume. However, the staff are united; these foods and drinks do not have a place at our school, so I spoke to the students about making sure they are consumed, and any waste disposed of, before they enter the school grounds. Members of the executive team have been greeting students at the gates next to Recreation and Arts Centre and reminding students who have these foods/drinks to quickly finish them before they head to their locker. I have been extremely pleased and proud of how our students have responded to this request. I would appreciate anything you can do to further support our stance at home.
Governing Council Opportunity
The constitution for the Governing Council allows for 14 parent representatives. Following the AGM held on Wednesday 12 February, 12 of the 14 places were filled. This means there are 2 vacancies that could be filled by you!
Being a Governing Council member is a fantastic way for you to be actively involved in supporting this school to be the best it can be. Governing council meets twice per term on a Wednesday evening from 7pm. Meetings usually go for 1 to 2 hours and cover a range of different agenda items from having a voice about the school’s strategic improvement plan, approving policies, providing advice about facility upgrades, and overseeing the finances of the school. Governing Council members do not need any formal training or qualifications, just a desire to attend, get involved and ask great questions. Darren Walker is our current chairperson and would love to hear from you if you would like to take up one of the 2 vacancies. Darren can be contacted via email (darren1270@gmail.com).
Parent Concerns School Contact
There are times when things go wrong, and you will want to raise a concern with the school. It is best if concerns are raised and followed up in a timely manner at the school level, but often you may not be sure who to raise the concern with. We have created a dedicated email address (dl.1834.parentconcerns@schools.sa.edu.au) to support families to let us know of your concern(s). The email will be monitored by Belinda Noack (Wellbeing Leader) and she will triage your concern and connect you with the person in the school who can respond most appropriately. You can expect to be contacted by the person responding to your concern within 3 working days.
Community Shout Outs
Is there a teacher or SSO who has had a positive impact on you or your child? Someone who has shown exceptional care or gone above and beyond, and deserves some recognition? If the answer is yes, then I encourage you to go to the school’s website, click on the Thank A GGHS staff button and send through a message of appreciation. Our staff love receiving these unexpected and kind thoughts. They make their day, leaving them feeling good about the positive impact they are having.
New Senior School Polo Shirts
The new senior school polo shirts (for Year 10 and 11 students) with the white panels and collar look fabulous and have been a very popular addition to the school uniform. We understand some families with students in Year 11 have chosen not to purchase the new polo shirt, because in 12 months they will need to purchase their child new Year 12 uniform items. We understand this decision and it is not a problem at all. You child is welcome to continue to wear their yellow paneled polo shirt all year. However, if you looking to purchase one of the new polo shirts they are available from the Devon Clothing Uniform Shop located at the Clovercrest Plaza for $35 in a range of sizes.

Class of 2024 Recognition Ceremony
On the evening of Monday 17th February, the Class of 2024 were celebrated for their SACE High Achievements at our Recognition Ceremony. It was the exclamation point to the incredible year for the Class of 2024 who were collectively our top performing cohort ever and thoroughly deserving of the recognition they received.
Our students were joined in recognising their achievements by parents and family, staff and local community members, and is a cherished part of our school celebrations. What a wealth of achievement that speaks to the diverse range of opportunities available to our students to pursue pathways they are passionate about and can now kick off into a fulfilling future.
The speech from Liam Jackson DUX 2024 was a highlight being both moving and motivating. It was a great night reconnecting with our now old scholars and we hope to keep that connection with them, inviting them back to our school community in the future.
Congratulations to all the award winners, we cannot wait to see where your next steps take you
If you missed it on the night, you can still head over to our Facebook to celebrate with us there!
Middle School
A warm and heartfelt welcome to our Year 7 students and their families as they join the GGHS Middle School community!
The start of 2025 has been filled with excitement and enthusiasm as we focus on building strong relationships and supporting student success through Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL). Our Year 7s have begun their high school journey, while our Year 9s are adjusting to learning in new spaces outside the Middle School building. We recognize that these transitions can be both exciting and overwhelming, and our priority has been to ensure that all students feel safe, supported, and connected in their new environment.
We look forward to a fantastic year ahead!
Year 7
Our week 1 was a busy four days, getting to know one another, find our way around, learning how to use our lockers, setting up or laptops and so much more. One of the major events was our annual Year 7 students held their Adventure Day, an event aimed at fast tracking our relationship and team building. It was a cracker of a day, sunny but cool, perfect for a whole day of fun, team building games. We were challenged in our grove groups to solve problems, complete puzzles, to be leaders and followers and work together as a team to complete tasks and overcome obstacles. Our peer leaders and teachers all encouraged us and helped us to be resilient. It was an awesome day! Please note this was a paid event, if you haven't paid, please do so via the QKR app.
The following day we also learnt about how to support our own wellbeing in the transition to high school. Paul Lowe from Headspace the leading youth mental health service came out to talk to us about the mental health continuum, who was in our support network and where to turn if things got to overwhelming. It was great to see students listening and thinking about how they can help themselves through this big change.
These first four weeks have been a BIG learning curve for all our students and families. There are so many things' students are still working on, like what do I need for this lesson and how do I fit all my stuff in my locker. We are lucky to have the most committed Grove Teachers, Peer Leaders and SSOs who are working alongside them to help them with all the BIG and small challenges along the way.
Year 8
It's been an exciting start to the year for our year 8 students and our new leader Mr Brodie Forbes!
Our theme that will guide all we do this year is being 'in the zone' and what a happy coincidence that we kicked it off with our Year 8 Big Day Out at TimeZone TTP - read more about this below!
In the zone is about how we approach our day together, from recognising how we are feeling and how this may impact our day, building routines that support students to be successful in the classroom to how we navigate our friendships and relationships with others. Through building self-awareness, students can better understand how they contribute to our wider school community and the responsibilities we all have to making our school the best place to be.
Zones are also our name for the spaces around our classrooms that our students like to use during lessons, with each Grove taking responsibility of a 'zone' where they need to ensure the space is clean and tidy, chairs and tables are where they should be and the space is available for students to wait for their teachers to arrive. This year this has extended to inside the classroom. Each Grove has been tasked with designing their classroom, with free choice of theme and resources, as long as it promotes learning in the space and is a collaborative decision from all members of the class. Mr Forbes has given each Grove a budget they can use to bring their design to life, all they need to do is prepare a pitch (think Shark Tank) that demonstrates how they worked collaboratively, a clear vision for their design and how they will take ownership to take care of their space. Look out in future editions for updates on their designs!
To support our whole school focus on respect and how we interact with others, our year 8 team have extended the already loved shout out recognition system we have in our school so that students can also 'shout out' their mates when they see them doing something great. It's as simple as following a link that was emailed to all year 8s to let Mr Forbes know which peer a student would like to recognise, and Mr Forbes will make sure their shout out is received... along with earning them 3 positive behaviour points! 'Where your focus goes, energy flows' and we truly hope the more students are looking out for the great things their peers are doing every day, the more positives we recognise and celebrate!

Year 9
This year, Raise Foundation will be running our Raise Youth Mentoring Program at Golden Grove High School once again. Our school will be selecting students who will benefit most from having an independent, caring adult who shows up just for them every week. If you’re looking for meaningful volunteer work, Raise is seeking youth mentors in our community. Raise provides full training, support, and a qualified program counsellor to equip volunteers with everything they need to empower a young person to believe in themselves and navigate life’s challenges. Applications are closing soon! For more information or to sign up, visit www.raise.org.au.
NAPLAN
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) for our Year 7 and Year 9 students is fast approaching. Students participate in 4 on-line tests: Writing, Reading, Conventions of Language and Numeracy. All Year 7 and Year 9 students have been scheduled to participate in their tests with their normal classes, with their regular subject teachers, between Wednesday 12th March until Tuesday 18th March. Catch-up tests will take place until Monday 24th March. All Year 7 and 9 students are expected to participate in the NAPLAN online assessments unless exemption/withdrawal approval is negotiated with the Principal before the start of testing. This can be organised by contacting Ms Kristy Power for Year 7s or Ms Kirsty Ujhelyi for Year 9s, both on 8282 6400.
We value the data provided by the NAPLAN assessments, as it allows us to better support individuals in improving their literacy and numeracy, as well as improving whole school learning in these subjects. We, therefore, ask for your support in ensuring your child completes all assessments.
We are aware some students feel anxious leading up to NAPLAN; however, we want to reassure students and families, students are well prepared through the familiarisation activities we conduct. Students have been allocated one testing room to help ease the pressures, and all tests will be conducted by their subject teachers who students have already built positive relationships with. We only ask all students to give the assessments a genuine effort they can be proud of so we can use the results to better personalise their learning.
What do families need to do in the lead up to NAPLAN? All Year 7 and Year 9 students will be emailed instructions on how to install the NAPLAN Locked Down Browser to their laptop in preparation for the tests. This must be completed before testing begins on Wednesday 12th March. Subject and Grove teachers are supporting students with this process, but families can support by checking with students if this task has been complete. Students also need access to working wired headphones on all days of testing. As the Locked Down Browser halts all internet connectivity, Blue Tooth, and hence wireless earbuds, will not work. Lastly, as tests are on-line it is essential that all students charge their laptops every night to ensure that the testing runs smoothly and stress-free for our young people.
Any questions or concerns regarding Year 9s or NAPLAN in general, please contact Ms Kirsty Ujhelyi on 8282 6400. Any questions or concerns regarding Year 7 students, please contact Ms Kristy Power on 8282 6400.
Communications
This year has brought many exciting changes to how we communicate with students and families. The first big change has been our shift from Daymap to Compass as our daily organisation platform. Compass offers great user capabilities and communication with school and home, as well as ability to report absences and follow your child's schedule. We apologise to families who were not receiving information at the start of the year, the error was found by our diligent IT team and corrected so all families should now be receiving all communications from the school.
The Compass platform is accompanied by a parent app that can easily be downloaded from your app store. It allows you to stay up to date with your child's learning as well daily reminders through push notifications. Through the news feed option, we can quickly send whole school information or you can hear directly from your child's class teachers about what is happening in the classroom and any homework they need to complete. This means we will slowly transition away from the SZapp parent app, so you do not need to look in two places for information. This app will be phased out this term.
To help you as a parent or caregiver, here is a guide on where to find the information you need:
- Compass App - Your child's timetable and learning program, report absences, view assessment, and contact class teachers. You can also view the school news feed which will have up to date information about day-to-day matters around the school.
- School Website/Newsletter - Official school information and opportunities, contact with school leadership team, policy documents, school calendar, enrolment information, IT support, event registration and staff recognition.
- EdSmart - Official school letters, consent forms and large event information. This will appear as an email.
- Facebook - Showcase of the exciting things happening around the school, updates on upcoming events or changes to school calendar.
- Qkr - payment platform for school fees, events and fundraisers
As with any change to something new, it takes time to navigate, and we learn more about the capabilities of the platform as we go. We would love to hear from you about how the transition has been to Compass for you.

Year 9 Law and Society - Snack Election!
Mrs West's class have been learning all about our law-making structures in Australia and how this influences the society we live in. Part of this learning has been to understand what a representative democracy is, and how we choose the people we want to speak on our behalf in parliament.
What better way to understand the preferential voting system than to host our own class election for class snacks! Students chose the candidates, then were put through a 'semi' secret ballot process to determine the preferred winner. Our counters were closely watched by the observers to ensure no election fraud was committed and it is safe to say the class population were happy with the election results - Krispy Kreme's!
The next Friday's lesson was made all the sweeter with the doughnuts as students worked away on their assessment task.
Here were the candidates - which would have secured your vote?

Year 7 & 8 Basketball Carnival
On Friday of Week 5 a number of our Year 7 and 8 students headed down to The Lights Basketball Stadium to compete against a host of other schools in a one-day Basketball Carnival with a focus on fun, sportsmanship, participation and competition. We were well represented, having 4 boys' teams and 2 girls' teams, all of which competed well all day and had some awesome results with a number of strong victories throughout the day.
At the end of the day, our Division 1 Girls team narrowly missed out on taking out the competition, losing in the Grand Final to Riverbanks, having made it through a drawn Semi-Final on a count back. Our Division 2 Boys team went one better, winning the division after having the best record all day. All students represented the school in the best way, competing hard in all games but all the while playing in the spirit of the day.
A big thank you also goes out to our student coaches; Hayden, Austin, Jayden, Peyton and Annelise who did an amazing job coaching their teams and sharing their experience in the game with our younger students.
Thanks for a great day to all of our players and coaches!

School Life
Year 8 Big Day Out
The start of a school year is the perfect opportunity for students to make positive connections and foster friendships with new classmates that will support them in their success throughout the year.
One event that is always a highlight and a great opportunity to step outside of the classroom and focus on us as a community is our Year 8 Big Day Out. This year was a little bit different however!
A small group of our current year 9 students advocated for a re-vamp of the day that they believe would provide better opportunities for our students to connect with each other, build some healthy House competition and get out into the wider community. With the support of the year 8 leadership team, they completely redesigned the day from the ground up, taking advantage of the brand-new facilities at nearby TimeZone TTP. Running a whole year level event off site is no small task, and the leaders did a wonderful job supporting the younger students to make this happen. They even got involved themselves on the day, running connection activities within the venue.
Well, what can we say! We couldn't be prouder of the 200+ students who attended the day over two days. They had an absolute ball, took advantage of all the fun activities on offer and represented the school so well, the venue remarked on them being one the best school groups they have ever had, and happy to have them back again next year!
If you missed it on our socials, check out how the day went below!
Brodie Forbes, Rebecca Prout and Sarah West - Year 8 Leadership Team

Celebrating Our Incredible Leadership Group!
I want to take a moment to acknowledge the amazing work our leadership group has been doing this term. From the very start, they have stepped up with passion, dedication, and a strong sense of responsibility, proving what true leadership looks like.
Their commitment to supporting the Big AL Foundation, organizing our Positive Behaviour Program, and leading the charge on exciting initiatives like lunch time activities and organising future events has been nothing short of inspiring. They have written professional emails, spoken with community leaders, planned events, and found creative ways to make a real impact within our school and beyond.
What impresses me most is their ability to problem-solve, communicate, and work as a team, all while staying focused on their goal of making our school a better place. They are not just leading—they are inspiring others to step up and get involved. While in the process, being loud and proud about both Golden Grove and public education.
I couldn’t be prouder of how they have embraced their roles and taken ownership of their projects. Keep up the fantastic work—you are truly making a difference!
Marc Wallis - Student Wellbeing Leader and Student Leadership Program

The Big AL Foundation Casual Day
The passion of our student leaders was demonstrated on our Casual Day in week 5 as they spoke at the whole school Quad assembly of their partnership and drive to support the Big AL Foundation, not only just on Casual Day, but extending further to other events this term.
This support was reciprocated by Big AL Foundation founder Trish Evelyn who also spoke to all of our students about her passion for the mental wellbeing of young people. Trish is a strong advocate for the community action of our leaders, even speaking with Premier Peter Malinauskas of their amazing efforts. He has committed to matching all money raised by our leaders this term dollar for dollar, and with already $1205 raised, this is an incredible show of support for these young women!
Stay tuned for more student agency, community mindedness and youth leadership from these incredible young people!

The School Mental Health Service (SMHS) sits within Student Support Services in the Department for Education. Mental health practitioners are based in schools to support young people with mild to moderate and emerging mental health concerns.
The SMHS provides a brief intervention service – short term, time limited support. Practitioners have formal training in psychology, social work and/or occupational therapy and experience working in mental health related settings. They work collaboratively with students and families, education staff, other support service providers and external agencies to support young people to improve their psychological health and emotional wellbeing.
If longer term or more complex supports are needed, the practitioner will work with the student and their family to identify and link in with ongoing support services.
Defence School Mentor
Our Defence School Mentor (DSM), is a key member of our wellbeing team, supporting our Defence Force families in their transition into our school, providing a consistent point of contact, raising awareness of the unique issues faced by families and supporting these students through the challenges of relocation and change.
Our DSM can assist families and young people by:
- Providing ongoing well-being support
- Assisting students to quickly develop a sense of belonging
- Supporting students when a Defence parent is on deployment, or on training/exercise
- Explore opportunities provided by the ADF to help students in their new location, for example tutoring

Supporting Student Development
As a school there are few big issues we are trying to educate our young people about, the first is their consumption of fast food and energy drinks and the other is their use of social media. Both can have big impacts on their developing brains. Please see below two links to a helpful articles and videos from our SchoolTV site. This site is a fantastic resource for parents trying to navigate raising a young person in today’s world.
